Like a childhood prayer
I get the assurance from the kindly words you speak.
And as I picture your hand in mine
The slightest smile we share can only mean I love you.
But, one of us will go first.
They will shut their eyes forever
With one last smile.
And the other, having lost half of their life
Will live each day in darkness.
Their heart will surely beat
But for whom, or why?
With the echo of your footsteps and the door partly opened
My heart beats faster and I find you again.
When we are hand in hand, I forget about everything else.
It's almost as though time has stopped.
But, one of us will go first.
They will shut their eyes forever
With one last smile.
One day, one of us will be too tired.
They will go, almost happy to be first.
While the one left behind can only
wait to be reunited in heaven.
And as I picture your hand in mine
The slightest smile we share can only mean
I love you.
