The old man he looked tired
And he smiled so casually
Then setting down his small suit case
He ordered ............ "black coffee"
His eyes not in the room at all
And heart was somewhere far
Beyond the chatter in the room
Out to his own bright star
He turned and looked then smiled again
I asked him ............ "How are you"
"I'm fine" ... He said in humbled tones
Just resting ........."thinking too"
A holiday I asked him then
Your suitcase on the floor
"Oh no!" he said in somber tones
"I don't go ................. any more"
I'm off to see my dearest friend
"My wife" ............ she's not to well
Been five long years in hospital
"Alzheimer's" ............. "I can tell"
She doesn't even know my name
The day or week or year
Our children now are strangers too
She asks "Who are they dear"
The photographs a memory
Of someone else's life
And "Who are you" "tell me again"
About your lovely wife.
My eyes were moist but his were bright
And twinkled as he spoke.
My tea untouched his coffee gone
My throat just dry and choked
"She doesn't know you sir at all"
And yet five years have gone
Why do you go to visit her
"let memories" ......... linger on
Of better times and younger days
When love was in it's prime
When you and she were courting strong
And romance "sweet" ........ "sublime"
He listened as he always did
I gave my point of view
And then his eyes with tears just filled
And fell like morning dew
Your right young man a waste of time
When going every day
To take her flowers and hold her hands
In every single way
She doesn't know me ........ not at all
I could be
....................... anyone
She laughs and smiles at everything
"forgets me" .............. when I've gone
Then feeling so frustrated now
"your time and money to"
A waste of time I told him now
"you've" ..... better things to do
He looked at me behind those eyes
And smiled with loving care
"She doesn't know me. Not at all."
